About 6 miles North of the Equator I was down below replying to an email, the winds were about 14 kn. All of a sudden I was slammed with extremely high winds and rain. I had been sailing in what I would term an aggressive manner at close to 6 kn. Plenty of canvas up. The next 45 minutes were a rodeo of trying to get the boat back under control. A fun addition was that one of my winches seized as I was using it to furl the Genoa. This was the first time on the trip that I would have been grateful to have a second hand.
No damage occurred but below was a mess with a good amount of water having come in from a leak but also from the sink drain. Eventually the winds abated and I began the cleanup. I was in no rush to get back to 6 KN! And I wasn’t even paying attention to the chart plotter while crossing the Equator.
